Why A Retractable Pergola Is Not Recommended
Why a Retractable Pergola is Not Recommended
We quite often encounter the question: In SunLever, we have several types of bioclimatic louvered pergola, why not design a retractable pergola.
There are several reasons:
The purpose of a bioclimatic pergola is air circulation and shading, which louvered pergola and retractable pergola can do both.
Both these 2 pergolas can also be completely closed off the roof and waterproofed, thus providing a shelter when it rains.
The louvered roof pergola has a simpler assembly mechanism, the blades are opened and closed via connection rod, and top structures are covered more gracefully.
The retractable pergola requires runners, on the one hand takes up more space and doesn't store much. Thus, contamination and damage to the roof may occur more frequently.
When retracting the blades to one side of the pergola, there will always be at least 1/4 of the roof occupied - even in a vertical position, the blades will take up some space and not be able to fully store them.
A louvered roof pergola has an angle of 90-120 degrees(140 series pergola is 90 degrees and 170&220&300 series pergolas are 120 degrees) when fully opened.
If you enjoy sunbathing, we recommend moving your outdoor furniture a bit outside the pergola, where you will have free space to and enjoy and relax.
The retractable roof still retains the upper supporting profiles, which in principle always shade the sun when it moves, and the view of the sky bounded by a rectangle overhead is not very pleasing to the eye.
Also price for retractable pergola is much higher than louvered pergola.
Therefore, it is concluded that the utility and cost-effectiveness of the louvered roof pergola is better.
So we don't recommend to use a retractable pergola.
